Curse those confounded expectations: this airbrushed Zac Efron vehicle is really not so bad. Crucially, it showcases a performance by the High School Musical moppet that is so warm and winning it almost made me want to revisit those earlier button-eyed, song-and-dance antics.

Greg Dyke to chair BFI

Greg Dyke, the former director general of the BBC who resigned in the wake of the Hutton Enquiry, has been appointed chair of the British Film Institute. He takes over from Anthony Minghella, the Oscar-winning director of The English Patient and Cold Mountain, whose tenure saw the launch of the new BFI Southbank centre in London.

The Farrelly brothers are back with their most satisfying comedy in a long while. Breaking out the bad taste and the political incorrectness in generous measure, they keep the laughs coming. It's a cheerfully immature reworking of the 1972 movie scripted by Neil Simon and directed by Elaine May: a regular guy finds his soulmate while on honeymoon - having married someone else. And that someone else is turning out to be a nightmare. Stiller plays Eddie, a guy who has just turned 40 and rushes into marriage with the sexy Lila (Malin Akerman); she only reveals her dark side while they're on honeymoon in Mexico. Then he finds a connection with sweet, sane Miranda (Michelle Monaghan), a single woman who is on holiday at the same resort with her extended family. There are no awards here for profundity, and some of the bad-taste stuff is pretty stomach-turning. But you certainly get hosed down with a stream of gags - of, erm, varying sorts.
